Ethereum implements Altair upgrade on mainnet
In another step towards transitioning Ethereum to Ethereum 2.0, the blockchain network has successfully implemented the Altair upgrade on the beacon chain on Wednesday, October 27th.
With the implementation of the first beacon chain network upgrade, Ethereum has taken one step closer to becoming a full-scale Proof-of-Stake network.
The mainnet launch of Altair was live-streamed as developers added several functionalities to the beacon chain. The beacon chain is a chain that introduces PoS to the Ethereum network. It runs parallel along the Ethereum proof-of-work chain and will eventually be merged with the Ethereum Mainnet.
As planned, the network executed the upgrade around epoch 74240 (Oct 27, 2021, 10:56:23 am UTC).
According to the Ethereum Foundation, Altair was named after the Altair star in the constellation of Aquila. To help decide the upgrades’ names, the community decided to use the star names in alphabetical order for future upgrades.
