FB’s senior exec emphasis user protection in Metaverse
Nick Clegg, a senior executive officer of Global Situation at Facebook, told Reuters in an interview that Facebook (now Meta) is looking for ways to ensure user protection in the metaverse business.
Facebook has been accused of infringing privacy several times, including its unauthorized use of user data. It has been under scrutiny from law enforcement due to its approach towards user privacy and safety, with new concerns arising amid Meta’s new initiatives.
However, in a Zoom interview with Reuters, Clegg noted:
“This time we can work with academics, we can work with lawmakers, we can work with regulators together and collaboratively, to put the guard rails in place before the technology matures.”
Facebook announced last week that it has changed its parent company’s name to ‘Meta’ and placed its Metaverse business at the core of its future plans. At the time, the company explained that replacing the name shows Facebook’s commitment towards the realization of virtual reality.
“In this future, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up,” Zuckerberg penned in a letter announcing Facebook’s rebranding.
