FTX taps MLB star Shohei Ohtani as next brand ambassador
Major League Baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani has now been appointed as an ambassador for crypto exchange FTX, CNN first reported the news on Tuesday. The team ‘Angels’ pitcher has joined the list of sports celebrities tapped by FTX as part of its global marketing strategy.
As per the report, the entirety of the compensation to Ohtani will be paid in equity and cryptocurrencies. However, neither party has revealed the stake to be paid to the professional pitcher.
Ohtani, who became the first player in MLB history to be selected as an All-Star as both a pitcher and a batter, will serve as the spokesperson for both FTX main exchange and its US subsidiary FTX.US. He will be responsible for increasing the company’s brand awareness and participating in promotional events.
FTX has been actively splashing the cash in several sports dealings, apparently to make up for the lost time. “A big piece of this is we are trying to get a lot done in a quick period of time. We are really excited about the progress our business has made, but we are also very late to the game,” FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried told CNN.
Before Ohtani, FTX has also inked deals with NFL quarterback Tom Brady, two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Stephan Curry. The exchange also became MLB’s official crypto sponsor and holds naming rights to the home arena of the Miami Heat and the football field at UC Berkeley.
