Popular US investment app Robinhood reported on Monday that its system suffered a data breach. The violation has resulted in the exposure of personal details of more than 7 million customers.

The investment company revealed that the data breach occurred on the 3rd of this month after a third-party tricked one of its employees to provide personal information of users from the internal system. The person impersonated an authorized party to obtain data on a phone call.

The blog post issued by the company reported that the third party was able to obtain the email addresses of over 5 million users and full names of over 2 million users. In addition, the caller was able to obtain personal information such as names, dates of birth, and zip codes of about 310 people.

Meanwhile, Robinhood noted that no information such as the Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, or credit card numbers that could lead to financial damage was leaked. The Broker app revealed that the criminal demanded extortion payment after the incident occurred last week.

“As a Safety First company, we owe it to our customers to be transparent and act with integrity. Following a diligent review, putting the entire Robinhood community on notice of this incident now is the right thing to do,” Robinhood Chief Security Officer Caleb Sima noted in the company’s blog post.

Robinhood is a popular investment app that went public on Nasdaq in June of this year. The company attracted attention in the United States after it allowed users to make small investments from smartphones.

Since March 2020, the platform enabled users to trade in cryptocurrencies following an explosion of investment activities after the COVID-19 pandemic. Robinhood currently offers trading services in 7 types of crypto assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Ethereum Classic, Bitcoin LV, and Dogecoin.
