Senator proposes crypto payment options for merchants in US Capitol
US Senator Ted Cruz has submitted a resolution to introduce crypto-asset payments to stores and vendors in the US Capitol. The proposed legislation was published under a parliamentary document on the 1st.
“As consumers better understand and embrace cryptocurrency, merchants are increasingly accepting crypto as a payment method. Congress is typically slow to adopt new technology,” Cruz said in an interview with Breitbart News. He noted:
“My bill would position Congress to lead on this issue by having congressional cafeterias, vending machines, and gift shops accept crypto payments.”
A resolution is a legislation submitted by the US Senate or House of Representatives. However, unlike a regular bill, its effectiveness is limited to Congress. The resolution entitled “Exchange of Payment for Transactions” would require the offices of the Capitol to enter a contract with food services and vending machines inside the parliament that would accept crypto as payments.
Congressman Cruz has been one of the active advocates for cryptocurrencies in the Senate. In October, at the Texas Blockchain Summit in Texas, Cruz noted that Bitcoin (BTC) mining could bring benefits such as the utilization of renewable energy and the support to the state’s power grid.
Cruz was also one of the only lawmakers to oppose the US Bipartisan Infrastructure bill that contained a controversial clause under the crypto tax provisions. The bill contained a clause that could extend tax reporting in the crypto sector to companies, developers, and miners that do not have access to customer data.
