Croatia’s supermarket giant to accept crypto payments
Croatia’s leading retail chain “Konzum” is ready to accept new forms of payments. The company announced on December 1 that it will accept crypto payments for online shopping, becoming the first retail chain in Croatia to debut crypto settlements.
As per the announcement, the retail chain will accept nine different cryptocurrencies – bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), bitcoin cash (BCH), EOS, DAI, ripple (XRP), stellar lumen (XLM), tether (USDT), and USDC – from buyers who will purchase groceries and household items online. Konzum also plans to consider introducing crypto assets for offline transactions.
“The introduction of cryptocurrency payments is another indicator that Konzum is constantly monitoring global trends, introducing innovations and setting the standard in the retail sector,” Uroš Kalinić, Member of the Management Board of Konzum for Finance and IT said in the announcement. He added:
“We continue to invest in the development of innovations and technologies in order to remain the first choice for our customers and as a next-generation retail chain to provide a premium shopping experience.”
With more than 700 stores in Croatia, Konzum is a supermarket chain and part of the Fortenova Grupa, the largest food manufacturing and retailing company in the Balkan region.
The introduction of cryptocurrency payments was realized in partnership with Croatia-based fintech company Electrocoin and their PayCek system. In order to avoid fluctuations in payments due to volatility, the rate of exchange will be fixed at the start of the transaction.
